Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution," set in Shanghai during the Japanese occupation of China in World War II, grew -- and grew -- out of a short story by the late Eileen Chang. The story, about a young spy for the resistance and her intended victim, is remarkable for its complexity and density; it's almost freeze-dried, yet accessible to the imagination. In a few dozen pages Chang's narrative suggests the intricacies and ambiguities of sexual and political conquest, the shifting frontier between eroticism and love, and the paradox of theatrical performance, a process of becoming by way of pretending. The 157-minute film, in Mandarin with English subtitles, expands on all those themes, and adds explicit sex scenes that have earned an NC-17 rating. Sumptuously produced and beautifully visualized, this is a filmmaker's meditation on the culture that nurtured him. As a piece of entertainment, however, it's hoist by its own paradox -- an almost thrill-free thriller that seems seductive, yet stays resolutely remote.

The heroine, Wong Chia-Chih (an impressive screen debut by Tang Wei), is a movie fan with a gift for acting that she discovered as a college student; since her story resonates with "Notorious" and "Suspicion," we're treated to fleeting Hitchcock clips. (The plot is also similar to Paul Verhoeven's recent, and shamelessly entertaining, "Black Book.") Pressed into service by young activists who loathe the puppet government installed by Japan, Wang pretends to be Mrs. Mak, the wife of a Hong Kong businessman, insinuates herself into the household of a brutal government official, Mr. Yee, and seduces him in order to set him up for assassination.

He's played by Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, the Hong Kong actor who was so hypnotically soulful in "In the Mood for Love." This time his character conceals the existence of a soul as best he can -- the caution of the title is just as important as the lust. What he soon reveals of himself is a sexual ferocity that befits a man who does the lethal bidding of a brutal government. But Mr. Yee is not only a brute, and Wong Chia-Chih is not only an apprentice pretender trying to pull off a layered role -- that of an ambitious, materialistic adulteress who falls victim to her own passion. Human interactions, the film says -- and by extension international relations -- are more tangled than we can know or imagine.

There's so much to ponder in the screen adaptation by Wang Hui Ling and James Schamus that I kept wondering, while watching, why I found the action so uninvolving, and the rhythms so repetitive. The answer for me lies in the movie's relentlessly somber, self-serious tone. "Lust, Caution" is obviously not an occasion for frivolity; it's about urgent purposes, closed-off characters and fateful events. Still, some emotional variety would have been welcome, at least around the edges. Take that cell of revolutionary students, the college kids who draft Wong Chia-Chih for her dangerous mission. They are, in reality, foolish dabblers and screw-ups who might have become overtly comic characters in an early movie by Godard. Not here, though. Apart from a couple of amusing lines, they're deadly earnest and quite lifeless.

And the heroine's motivation is playful at first; at least that's what we're told, if not shown. Like many shy, introspective people, she discovers that acting turns her on to the point of personal liberation. Indeed, the performer's high is essential to the film's equation. Mr. Yee, too, is liberated by role-playing -- his own as well as hers. Yet there's rarely a trace of zest in what she does, and no relief from the impassive face he turns to the world, except in their sexual encounters, which are less erotic than athletic, acrobatic or even geometric in their graphic intensity. A freeze-dried story has been only partially defrosted.

London (CNN) -- A golden cape woven from the silk of 1.2 million Golden Orb spiders has gone on display at London's Victoria and Albert Museum.

The richly-embroidered garment -- its bright yellow hue is the natural color of the spider silk -- is the result of a seven-year project on the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar.

Using long poles, a team of 80 people worked to collect the spiders from their webs each day and harvest their silk before returning them to the wild.

The project was the brainchild of American fashion designer Nicholas Godley and British art historian and textile expert Simon Peers, who have both lived in Madagascar for many years.

"The idea of using spider silk to create garments goes back 300 years," Godley told CNN. "The last significant attempt to succeed was at the turn of the century, when a French Jesuit priest based in Madagascar, Jacob Paul Camboue, experimented with 'milking' spiders for their silk."

Peers had long been intrigued by the idea, and on a visit to his office, Godley's imagination was sparked when he spotted an unusual-looking tool which Peers explained was for collecting silk from spiders.

"The idea never died, we kept revisiting it over the years, and eventually I shut my handbag factory so we could build a proper 'spidery' and experiment with harnessing spiders and harvesting their silk. We found that it worked.

"We were amazed -- you stand there watching it happen and you start to question your sanity. Is this really happening, or have I lost my bananas?

"We had 24 spiders harnessed up, the spindle was going, and silk was coming out. That was our eureka moment. We were over the moon, but it was just the beginning."

Scaling the project up proved a huge challenge -- only female Golden Orb spiders make silk. Hundreds of thousands of them were needed, and their cannibalistic nature meant the creatures had to be separated to prevent them from eating their neighbors.

Godley admits that the properties of spider silk -- and the practicalities and costs involved -- mean that industrial-scale production for use in textiles is unlikely ever to succeed.

"From a fashion perspective, it's impractical," he told CNN. "It's a natural fiber, and it shrinks, so you can't wash or dry clean it, and obviously it is hugely expensive to produce, so how would you begin to price it?"

Instead, they simply wanted to prove that it could be done, and to create two items which could help revive traditional Malagasy weaving techniques and embroidery skills, and to showcase the talents of people working on the island.

The four-meter-long brocade scarf, which was first shown at New York's Natural History Museum in 2009, was created using old Malagasy patterns, but as Godley explained, the inspiration for the cape, which made its debut at London's V&A Museum today, came from the spiders themselves.

"After we finished the scarf, we wondered what to make next, and I really liked the idea of a cape, because of the fact that spiders cocoon their prey, wrapping them up, and I was intrigued by the thought of being cocooned in spider silk."

The cape is covered in images of spiders, plants and flowers, which took 6,000 hours to embroider, and those lucky enough to get up close have discovered that it is virtually weightless.

"We do a party trick where we get people to close their eyes and we put the tassels from the cape in one of their hands and ask them to guess which hand it is in. Half of them have no clue, and the other half get it wrong -- only a few guess, but only because of the warmth.

"The cape itself is like an invisibility cloak, you almost wouldn't know you were wearing it, and it has this mystical, ephemeral quality, just like a spider's web, but also a permanence.

"A spiderweb is here today and gone tomorrow, but we have found a way to harness that and turn it into something lasting."

But despite working so closely with them for so many years, Godley admits he is still afraid of spiders.

"I am fascinated by them, but still frightened of them: Spiders are poisonous, and they bite people," he said. "I am slowly trying to overcome it, but it hasn't stopped."

Kid gloves are, of course, gloves made from the skin of a young goat. I say 'of course' but, in fact, when they were first fashioned in the 18th century they were more often made from lambskin, as that was easier to come by. They were clearly not intended for use when you were pruning the hedge and wearing kid gloves was the sartorial equivalent of pale white skin, that is, it indicated that the wearer was rich enough to indulge in a life of genteel indoor idleness. The earliest mentions of kid gloves are from England in the 1730s and the following is a typical report of a wealthy gentleman, laid out in his 'Sunday best', from Bagnall's News, in The Ipswich Journal, December 1734:

The Corpse of Mr. Thorp, A Distiller in Soho, who died a few Days since, said to be worth £10000 was put into his Coffin, quilted within with white Sattin; and after several yards of fine Holland [best-quality linen] were wrapt about his Body... on his Head was a Cap of the same Holland tied with a white Ribbond; he has about his Neck two Yards of Cambrick; a Cambrick Handkerchief between his Hands, on which he had a pair of white Kid Gloves: and in this manner he lay in state some Days and was afterwards buried in Buckinghamshire.

At that time, kid gloves were viewed as rather ostentatious and only suitable for the nouveau riche - much as heavy gold chains might be viewed today. In the 19th century, kid glove wearing was taken up by a notable member of the gentry, William Pole-Tylney-Long-Wellesley, the fourth Earl of Mornington, which might have been expected to establish them as a desirable accessory. The Preston Chronicle included this item in February 1837:

Mr. Long Wellesley is, also, a man of excellent taste, though he rides in kid gloves, which Brummel used to say a man should be scouted [dismissed scornfully] for doing.

The dismissal of the gloves by the socialite and fashion authority Beau Brummell was enough to send them to the back of the 19th century chav wardrobe. Incidentally, I wasn't familiar with the word 'scouted' as meaning 'scorned' and when I looked it up I found this first usage in Samuel Palmer's Moral Essays, 1710:

They pass the rhodomontade till they're expos'd and scouted.

That led me to 'rhodomontade', another word I didn't know, which turns out to mean 'to speak boastfully or bombastically'. All in all, Brummel clearly didn't think much of kid gloves and they continued not to be worn by 'persons of quality'.

In fact, the description 'kid-gloved' came to be used as an insult, implying a lack of manhood, as was recorded in The Leicester Chronicle in January 1842:

This contraband system of political allusions appears to suit the taste and nerves of the cautious, gentlemanly, kid-gloved Conservatism, which cannot endure the shock of attending a public meeting.

It was only when the expression (and presumably also, the gloves) crossed the Atlantic that the negative connotations were lost and 'handling (or treating) with kid gloves' began to be used as we use it today, that is with the meaning 'delicately; carefully'. The New-York monthly magazine The Knickerbocker has the first example of the term in print, from 1849:

"Belligerent topics are not our forte and never was; neither do we handle them with kid gloves, when they fairly come in the way."

其實，這整篇文章沒說出重要的課題；著名的漢文或詩詞等的引用、沿革史。英文著作在這文上，倒相當的多，就某一程度，著名的牛津字典（O.E.D.）屬其中高水準的。

我舉個惡例：讀者讀到「…….向錢先生『獵獅』（“lion-hunting”）……」的比喻（黃維樑著《文化英雄拜會記—錢鍾書、夏志清、余光中的作品及生活》，頁.34），一定看不懂。聽過武松打虎，洋人非洲獵獅的，不過這兒的典故不容易懂？

其實，這是黃維樑抄余光中的作品：『文章與前額並高』（談梁實秋先生）--可是『獵獅』在原作上下文中，多少可意會，而黃維樑先生的，卻費解。

余光中：「當時我才23歲，十足一個噪進的文藝青年，並不很懂觀像，卻頗熱中『獵獅』（“Lion-hunting”）。這位文苑之獅，學府之師，被我糾纏不過…….」

換句話說，黃先生的「拿來」方式，斷文取義，變得更玄。真是「鴛鴦繡出從教看，莫把金針度與人。」
其實，余光中先生的原文加注英文，通常要對讀者說說典故的，免得讓後來學生將「金剛」與「和尚」混淆了。或像我們這樣年齡的讀者，可能得猛摸「髮岸線」（hairline—注：這是『文章與前額並高』中余先生「觀（梁實秋先生）像」之妙譯。）

Meaning

A man who can turn his hand to many things.

Origin

With any phrase that includes a name, it's natural to consider whether its the name of a real person. In this case, as was the case with many other literary Jacks - Jack the Lad, Jack Robinson, Jack Sprat, Jack Horner, Jack Frost, etc, Jack of all trades was a generic term rather than a living and breathing individual. In fact, the very long list of terms that include 'Jack' exceeds that of any other name in English and this reflects the fact that, as a derivative of the common name 'John', 'Jack' has been used just to mean 'the common man'. This usage dates back to the 14th century and an example is found in John Gower's Middle English poem Confessio Amantis, 1390:

Therwhile he hath his fulle packe,
They seie, 'A good felawe is Jacke'.

We now use 'Jack of all trades, master of none' in a derogatory way. Originally, this wasn't the case and the label 'Jack of all trades' carried no negative connotation, the 'master of none' part being added later. Nevertheless, mediaeval Jacks were pretty much at the bottom of the social tree. The OED defines the generic meaning of the name Jack thusly:

Jack - A man of the common people; a lad, fellow, chap; especially a low-bred or ill-mannered fellow, a 'knave'

If 16th century commentators wanted to imply that a person was stretching their talents too thinly they resorted to the disparaging Latin term Johannes factotum ('Johnny do-it-all'). In 1592, the English writer and member of the literary establishment Robert Greene wrote a pamphlet entitled Groats-worth of Witte. In that he ventured the opinion that a new writer on the scene was:

An upstart crow, beautified with our feathers, that supposes he is as well able to bumbast out a blanke verse as the best of you. Beeing an absolute Johannes fac totum, is in his owne conceit the onely Shake-scene in a countrey.

Sadly for Greene's ongoing reputation the 'Upstart crow' was William Shakespeare.

Various trades were populated by Jacks - lumberjacks, steeplejacks for example, and sailors were Jack-tars.

For no especial reason, I've included a picture of three of my uncles who were steeplejacks. For the record, none of them was a Jack outside of work; they were Gilbert, Frank and Verdon.

The name Jack was also added to many utilitarian objects which in some way took the place of a lad or man, for example:

There can't have been any trades in the Middle Ages that didn't make use of a jack of some sort. 'Jack of all trades' entered the language in 1612 when Geffray Minshull wrote of his experiences in prison in Essayes and characters of a prison and prisoners:

Some broken Cittizen, who hath plaid Jack of all trades.

The 'master of none' addition began to be added in the late 18th century. The headmaster of Charterhouse School, Martin Clifford, in a collection of notes on the poems of Dryden, circa 1677 wrote:

Your Writings are like a Jack of all Trades Shop, they have Variety, but nothing of value.

In 1770, the Gentleman's Magazine offered the opinion that "Jack at all trades, is seldom good at any."

The earliest example that I can find in print of the actual phrase 'Jack of all trades, master of none' is in Charles Lucas's Pharmacomastix, 1785:

The very Druggist, who in all other nations in Europe is but Pharmacopola, a mere drug-merchant, is with us, not only a physician and chirurgeon, but also a Galenic and Chemic apothecary; a seller of druggs, medicines, vertices, oils, paints or colours poysons, &c. a Jack of all trades, and in truth, master of none.

Maybe taking on 'all trades' wasn't wise but Jacks were often master craftsmen in their chosen trade. History books tell us that Cardinal Wolsey built Hampton Court Palace and that Charles Barry built the Houses of Parliament - don't believe it, it was Jack.

Asian Banks Learned From Past Sins

New debates over ways to make the global banking system a safer place are, ironically, making a lot of people nervous. But Asia's lenders are one group warranting remarkably little concern.

In the lead-up to the financial crisis, certain banks piled on too much debt and exposed themselves to excessive risk. Multiple taxpayer-funded bailouts later, regulators and politicians are turning their attention to how they can prevent the fiasco from recurring.

A draft proposal of new global standards for banking capitalization known as Basel 3 is the first serious stab at this task. Generally, it will require banks to hold more equity capital and maintain greater liquidity. There also is the Obama administration's proposal to restrict large commercial banks with a U.S. presence from engaging in significant proprietary trading and owning hedge funds or private-equity funds.

The Volcker rule, so called because of its support from former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, faces opposition from Republicans and an uncertain future. And Basel 3 rules still could go through some changes. But already they are provoking anxiety.

As it is, the U.S. and U.K. are likely to experience a decline in credit in the next two years, says Paul Shulte, a strategist at Nomura Holdings. Banks facing tighter Basel 3 capital requirements will have even less money to lend, potentially causing a dangerous contraction. 'You can't talk about rehabilitation until the patient is out of intensive care,' he says.

Asian banks are remarkably free from such concerns. Most are well capitalized. And they are less dependent on wholesale funding -- that is, borrowing from other lenders through what is called the interbank market.

Their business lines are very simple: They take deposits and make loans. Maybe they issue credit cards and extend trade credit. They don't issue many derivatives or trade much for their own account.

Most would never fall afoul of the Volcker rule if it somehow applied to them.

'The problems in Asia are obviously a lot less than in the Western world,' says Simon Ho, a banking analyst at Citigroup Global Markets.

Asia's present virtue owes much to a sinful past. Reckless lending by Asian banks drove many to the brink when the 1997-98 financial crisis hit. In the dozen years since then, they have sharply reduced their debt levels, and regulators have gotten better at keeping them in line.

The picture in some parts of Asia is less rosy, notably Japan, where Basel 3 would be particularly unwelcome because of how it treats single-A-rated corporate bonds commonly held by the country's lenders.

Taiwan and Malaysia are potential problem markets, Mr. Ho notes, and possibly South Korea, in part for its reliance on wholesale funding -- though all three still compare favorably with Europe or the U.K. if you look at Citigroup's projected average Tier 1 ratios under Basel 3.

China, where mountains of bad loans a decade ago led to a massive government bailout of its biggest banks, has become surprisingly aggressive at prudential regulation. To be sure, credit growth occasionally gets out of hand, as it did last year under government orders to prop up the economy. And the banks' levels of subordinated debt, a less-favored form of capital, worry some. Still, China's banking watchdog recently pushed some lenders to raise more equity capital, even though their current capital-adequacy ratios are high by global standards. That probably is to provide a buffer for a rise in bad-loan levels and future loan growth, but it also is because China's regulator prefers to be cautious.

China wants its capital-adequacy ratios 'to be among highest in the world,' Mr. Shulte says.

Genetically modified tobacco could help to locate landmines

Tobacco might be a much maligned plant for our health but it potentially could help to save lives.

A Danish bio-technology firm has genetically modified a tobacco plant to make its leaves change colour - from green to red - when it detects nitrogen dioxide. A compound known to leach into the soil from landmines.

In many parts of the world anti-personnel landmines remain a deadly legacy of conflict that kill thousands of people every year. Clearing mines is a costly, labour intensive and dangerous process.

Sniffer dogs, armoured vehicles and robots can be used to detect and clear mines but much of the work by demining teams must be done manually. Sowing mine infested land with the genetically modified tobacco could help to locate landmines quickly from a distance.

Steen Thaarup is the CEO of Aresa in Copenhagen and says the firm is about to commence field trials in Serbia next week.

Mainland tempts makers to set up shop and offers vital market

The mainland is a growing force in chip manufacturing.

Intel's first semiconductor plant in China is expected to begin production next year.

Taiwan's United Microelectronics Corp, the world's second-biggest contract chipmaker, plans to acquire the rest of Hejian Technology, a Chinese foundry in which it holds a 15 per cent stake.

“We believe a production base in China is essential,” said Richard Yu of UMC.

“China's market was relatively strong even during [the global economic crisis], attracting many customers that preferred the option of local production.”

But China's domestic foundries are years away from mounting a serious challenge to their Taiwan counterparts, partly because of restrictions on technology transfer by the US and Taiwan governments.

Nearly all China's domestic foundries are struggling to stay profitable.

An advantage of being in Taiwan, according to Mr Yu, is that “the critical mass of semiconductor companies in Taiwan has really helped us optimise our operating efficiency.

“Within Taiwan's dedicated science parks in Hsinchu and Tainan, there are companies that represent the full spectrum of the semiconductor supply chain to fulfil industry needs”.

But China is becoming a vital market for Taiwan's semiconductor groups.

Donald Lu at Goldman Sachs estimates that China accounts for 13 per cent of demand for the contract chipmakers, meaning “demand from China and other emerging markets has become as important as demand from developed countries”.

David Cameron, the Tory leader campaigning to become Britain’s next prime minister, fits this stereotype all too neatly. He’s an Eton man, an alumnus of Oxford’s posh and rowdy Bullingdon Club, and a direct descendant of King William IV. His early career as Tory leader was devoted to “modernizing” the Conservative Party after a decade of defeat. This meant riding a bicycle, appearing regularly without a tie, and talking as much as possible about the environment and other liberal-sounding issues.

Yet the American right — and Americans in general — should be paying close attention to how Cameron’s Tories fare in Britain’s election on May 6, and how well they govern if they win. That’s because for all his leftward feints and politically correct gestures, Cameron is campaigning on a vision of government that owes a great deal to the American conservative tradition.

The Tories’ election manifesto, released early last week, promises “a sweeping redistribution of power” — from London to local institutions, and “from the state to citizens.” In one of the most centralized countries in the Western world, Cameron is championing a dramatic transfer of responsibility — for schools, hospitals, police forces — to local governments and communities. In a nation with a vast and creaking welfare state, he’s urging people to put more faith in voluntarism, charity and the beleaguered two-parent family. (This last plank has attracted the ire of none other than J. K. Rowling, who recently attacked the Tories for stigmatizing single motherhood.) His emphasis, again and again, has been on a smaller, leaner, less intrusive government — and in its place, a “big society” that can bear the burden currently shouldered by social workers and bureaucracies.

Nobody would mistake the Cameron Tories for Tea Partiers. By the statist standards of British politics, though, their manifesto’s emphasis on localism and limited government is quite daring. The Tories may sit to the left of American conservatives on a host of issues, but Cameron is offering a more detailed and specific vision of what conservative reform might mean than almost any English-speaking politician since the Reagan-Thatcher era.

Essentially, the Tories are gambling that the fiscal crisis facing every Western government will create an opportunity for decentralization on an unprecedented scale. If that gamble succeeds, Cameron’s government will offer an example to right-of-center parties everywhere — and Britain will offer a model, in an era of tight budgets and diminished expectations, for how nations can succeed (to borrow a Cameron catchphrase) at “doing more with less.”

But first Cameron’s party has to actually win the election, which is hardly a sure thing. The Tories are asking for a mandate to transform the British state at a time when the British public is mainly concerned about how to kick-start economic growth. This may explain why the Tories have been clinging to a narrow lead over the incumbent, Gordon Brown, despite the Labor Party’s epic mismanagement of the economy. Many disillusioned Britons seem tempted to cast a vote for the Liberal Democrats, the perpetual bridesmaids of British politics. The Lib Dem leader, Nick Clegg, was the clear winner in last week’s television debate, and his party’s poll numbers are soaring while Conservative support is flatlining.

Even if they manage to pull out a win, the Tories will have to actually execute the transformation that they’ve promised. Here the American experience is not encouraging. From Richard Nixon to Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush, almost every modern Republican president has pledged to decentralize government and empower local communities. But their successes have tended to be partial, and their failures glaring. Cameron’s decentralizing vision is much better thought out than Nixon’s “new federalism” or Bush’s promise of an “ownership society.” But it’s easy to imagine it meeting the same unhappy fate.

Finally, even if Cameronism could work, there may simply not be time to implement the kind of ambitious, long-term transformation he has in mind. Britain’s debt burden is worse even than that of the United States, and the fiscal crunch is looming. The window for big ideas may be closing, on both sides of the Atlantic and for right and left alike. In this election season, Cameron has tried to advance an idealistic politics of conservative reform. But he may find himself governing amid the grim politics of a permanent fiscal crisis.

The happiest place on earth is about to get a little more hairy.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Disneyland is loosening its legendary dress code – the so-called Disney Look, which is known to be one of the strictest in the corporate world – to allow employees to grow more facial hair.

Previously, employees had been allowed to grow a mustache but, under the new guidelines that will go into place on Feb. 3, they will now also be able to grow a beard or a goatee as long as it’s shorter than a quarter of an inch. So six of the Seven Dwarfs are still out of luck. (Dopey is more or less hairless.)

The rules still forbid visible tattoos, body piercings anywhere except in the ears of a woman, "extreme" hairstyles and, thankfully, soul patches.

"While we are careful to maintain our heritage and the integrity of our brand, a recent review of our guidelines led to a decision that an update was appropriate at this time," Betsy Sanchez, a Disneyland Resorts spokeswoman, said in a statement.

The soul patch (also known as a mouche^[1]) is a small patch of facial hair just below the lower lip and above the chin. It came to prominence in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was a style of facial hair common among African American men, most notably jazzmen.^[2] It became popular with beatniks, artists, and those who frequented the jazz scene and moved in literary and artistic circles. Jazz trumpeters in particular preferred the soul patch for the comfort it provided when using a trumpet mouthpiece.^[3]

While the Illinois governor's alleged illegal activities are far-reaching, most of the papers naturally focus on the claims that he tried to profit from his authority to name a successor for Obama in the senate. "The allegations suggest a breathtaking degree of brazenness on the part of the Illinois governor," says the Wall Street Journal, which points out the governor continued to talk about his schemes by telephone even after the Chicago Tribune reported Friday that his phone lines had been tapped.

What does 'invictus' mean? Invictus is the Latin word for "unconquered." It is also the title of a nineteenth-century poem written by William Ernst Henley. Henley wrote the poem as he lay in a hospital bed, recovering from the amputation of his leg after a long battle with tuberculosis of the bone. During Nelson Mandela's 27-year captivity as a political prisoner, he kept a copy of the inspirational poem on the wall of his cell. Mandela was released from prison on this date in 1990. Director Clint Eastwood's acclaimed film Invictus tells the story of how Mandela, South Africa's first black president, joined forces with the captain of the national rugby team, François Pienaar, to get South Africa's Springboks to the Rugby World Cup finals. They saw it as a way to begin the healing of a nation that had been torn apart by apartheid.

Ostler gives an account of the fluctuating fortunes of other major world languages. In each case their majesty has proved fragile. For instance, the might of Persian, established over a period of almost a thousand years, was shaken to its foundations in just 16. Usually, anyone who argues that English’s position is insecure proposes that some other language – most likely Spanish or Mandarin Chinese – will supersede it. Yet Ostler takes the view that by around 2050 no global lingua franca will be needed.
