More health symptoms reported near 'fracking' natural gas extraction

A Yale-led study has found a greater prevalence of health symptoms reported among residents living close to natural gas wells, including those drilled by hydraulic fracturing.

For one, she and her son, Sean Lennon, who is 37, recently started Artists Against Fracking, a group opposed to that method of drilling for natural gas. In typical form, Ms. Ono’s message has an apocalyptic edge.

Energy Companies Throw $3.2 Million Into Latest Pro-Fracking Push

New York state latest to see influx of campaign and lobbying cash from natural gas companies.

"Fracking" has a new victim: ice-cream. Hydraulic fracturing, the sometimes controversial oil and gas drilling method, is causing tremors in a small but vital corner of the food industry.

Guar gum, produced mostly in India, helps thicken foods ranging from ketchup to ice-cream. Problem is, it's also mighty useful in fracking fluid. With the surge in fracking, demand for guar gum has rocketed.

Having often languished at under 50 cents per pound, guar gum has recently changed hands at over $3, according to IMR International'sDennis Seisun, publisher of the catchy "Quarterly Review of Food Hydrocolloids".

Food manufacturers will have to scramble for guar supplies or seek alternatives as long as the drilling boom continues. For oil majors, guar is a relatively small expense, so their demand looks pretty immune to price. The added bonus for them is that, given fracking's many environmental critics, it's nice to be able to use something so harmless you can eat it.

fracking,水力壓裂法
A slang term for hydraulic fracturing. Fracking refers to the procedure of creating fractures in rocks and rock formations by injecting fluid into cracks to force them further open. The larger fissures allow more oil and gas to flow out of the formation and into the wellbore, from where it can be extracted.
Fracking has resulted in many oil and gas wells attaining a state of economic viability, due to the level of extraction that can be reached.

The guar/guwar/guvar bean or cluster bean (Cyamopsis tetragonolobus) is an annual legume and the source of guar gum. It grows best under conditions with frequent rainfall, but tolerates arid conditions well.[1] 80% of world production occurs in India, but, due to strong demand, the plant is being introduced into new areas. It is known as गवार् Gawaar in Hindi and Marathi, గోరు చిక్కుడు "Goruchikkudu kaya" or "Gokarakaya" in Telugu, Gorikayie in Kannada, and kotthavarai (கொத்தவரைக்காய்) in Tamil.
