non-traditional students as game-changers

NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS ARE KEY
Roughly 40 percent of America’s college students are non-traditional students. They are workers who’ve gone back to school, former members of the military embarking on new careers and single parents wanting to do better for their families. They could also be one of the most important game-changers in the ongoing national discussion on college completion and the continuing dialogue at College Inc. about how to fix higher education. The article is from the Washington Post’s blog.

The executive, a boyish-looking man named Adil Naji, reached over and took hold of the wrist of one of his younger brothers, Hisham. He hoisted the brother’s rough, callused fingers in front of the curator, Navina Haidar, and, with a climactic intensity that wouldn’t have been out of place in “Lawrence of Arabia,” exclaimed, “Look, this is my brother’s hand!”

homestay, homesick, The Hospitality of Circumstance

A Homestay in Guatemala: Making My Own Tortillas (but Eating Theirs)

By SETH KUGEL

San Juan La Laguna, a remote Guatemalan town with views of Lake Atitlan, hasn't been drastically reshaped by foreigners.

Homesick for Death:THE COMPLETE POEMS OF XAVIER VILLAURRUTIA ,Translated by D. M. Stroud,Saru Publications。 The hospitality of circumstance'。(http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/feat/archives/2004/08/29/2003200780

The Hospitality of Circumstance by D.M.

The phrase "the hospitality of circumstance" is taken from a book by the Edwardian British writer G.K.Chesterton, best-known for his Father Brown tales -- Roman Catholic polemics masquerading as detective stories, a mongrel genre, enthusiastically taken up by C.S.Lewis in his fairy stories for children (the Narnia books) that clumsily incorporated his own brand of muscular, no-nonsense Protestantism. Chesterton, writing about Dickens, punned on the phrase "taken in," meaning both "deceived" and "welcomed in out of the cold." He said this characterized holy fools, at one and the same time easily deceived and needing help and protection, and in so saying sought to publicize once more his own populist Catholicism. The chance coincidence of the phrase's two meanings was, he claimed, an instance of "the hospitality of circumstance" (or, put simpler, the luckiness of accident).】

http://www.readprint.com/chapter-1888/Gilbert-Keith-Chesterton

首 先,我們查網路英文辭典(from Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary),可以知道phrasal verb take sb in有雙義:take sb in (CARE FOR) [M] to take care of someone and provide a place in your home for them:例 Several families take in foreign students.;另外take sb in (DECEIVE) to cause someone to believe something which is not true, or to trick or deceive someone:例I can't believe she was taken in by him. 這就是原書介的「Chesterton, writing about Dickens, punned on the phrase "taken in," meaning both "deceived" and "welcomed in out of the cold."」

([kjv] Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.

Winterton文中介紹Gilbert Keith Chesterton為偵探小說先驅,不過他後來又引「Chesterton was one of the rather bizarre collection of English writers cited by the now classic Argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borges as influences on his style.」

homestay,

Homestay is a form of tourism and/or study abroad program that allows the visitor to rent a room from a local family to better learn the local lifestyle as well as improve their language ability.[1] While homestays can occur in any destination worldwide, some countries do more to encourage homestay than others as a means of developing their tourism industry.[2] Hosting a homestay participant also allows the local family to earn some additional, needed income. Having low profitability, as it is, homestay can not be regarded as strictly commercial activity, but more of cross cultural exchange.[verification needed] Students generally arrange a homestay with their school or educational institution, but can also informally arrange to stay with a family through social connections, and through a variety of private agencies. There are a number of online homestay agencies that connect students with hosts all over the world (usually for a nominal fee).

rem/roentgen equivalent in man

Water cannot be allowed to touch the thing that is deep inside the reactor: about 200 tons of melted nuclear fuel and debris, which burned through the floor and hardened, in one spot, into the shape of an elephant’s foot. This mass remains so highly radioactive that scientists cannot approach it. But years ago, when they managed to place measurement instruments nearby, they got readings of 10,000 rem per hour, which is 2,000 times the yearly limit recommended for workers in the nuclear industry.

head coach, senior coach or manager

A head coach, senior coach or manager is a professional at training and developing athletes. They typically hold a more public profile and are paid more than other coaches. In some sports such as soccer and baseball, the head coach is usually called a manager, whilst in other sports such as Australian rules football they are generally termed a senior coach.

Other coaches are usually subordinate to the head coach, often in offensive positions or defensive positions, and occasionally proceeding down into individualized position coaches.

search-and-rescue, taking turns, humanitarian crisis

take turns

Alternate, as in Since there is only one horse, Beth and Amanda are taking turns riding. This phrase uses turn in the sense of "one of a series of actions done in succession." [Late 1300s] Also see in turn.

The UN announced late on Friday that four foreign search-and-rescue teams, from Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and the US, were on their way. Singapore is sending an urban search-and-rescue team, as is Britain; Switzerland has sent 25 rescue and medical experts, with nine sniffer dogs.

[Anthropomorphism literally refers to generalizing various phenomena (including an animal's behavioral traits) from an area in which we feel confident about our understanding (our own human terms) to an area of relative ignorance. This also happens between various animals -- once I was troubled because "cold-blooded" reptiles (ectotherms, which obtain their body heat from external sources like the sun) were persistently viewed as "inferior" or "incompetent" in their temperature controls when compared to "warm blooded" animals (endotherms, which generate their own heat by metabolism). The view of reptiles was deeply misleading and I called it "endothermocentric." In fact, endothermy places an enormous energetic burden on an organism and can be a great disadvantage. Several endotherms have evolved ectothermic strategies to get through hard times.] Sir Francis Bacon commented on homo additus naturae, ("man added to nature"): In his "Plan of the Great Instauration" Bacon comments on the impediments to progress, one of the most prominent of which is that the mind "in forming its notions mixes up its own nature with the nature of things" (Greenberg, 1988:22).

The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Presentation of the Lord :

The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (as it is known in the West), or The Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple (its name in the East), is a liturgical feast celebrated by the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches.

The feast is associated with an event recounted not in the New Testament, but in the apocryphal Infancy Narrative of James. According to that text, Mary's parents, Joachim and Anne, who had been childless, received a heavenly message that they would bear a child. In thanksgiving for the gift of their daughter, they brought her, when still a child, to the Temple in Jerusalem to consecrate her to God. Mary remained in the Temple until puberty, at which point she was assigned to Joseph as guardian. Later versions of the story (such as the Gospel of Pseudo-Matthew and the Gospel of the Nativity of Mary) tell us that Mary was taken to the Temple at around the age of three in fulfillment of a vow. Tradition held that she was to remain there to be educated in preparation for her role as Mother of God.

History

The Presentation of the Virgin Mary by Titian (1534-38, Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice).

The feast originated as a result of the dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary the New, built in the year 543 by the Byzantines under Emperor Justinian I near the site of the ruined Temple in Jerusalem. Although this basilica was destroyed by the Sassanid Persians under Khosrau II after the Siege of Jerusalem (614), the feast continued to be celebrated throughout the East. The feast was celebrated in the monasteries of Southern Italy by the ninth century and was later introduced into the Papal Chapel in Avignon in the year 1372 by a decree of Pope Gregory XI.[1] It was included in the Roman Missal in 1472. But, as the fact of the "Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary" is only a pious belief, but not a defined matter of faith, it was suppressed by Pope Pius V in 1568.[2] As a result, it did not appear in the Tridentine Calendar. Pope Sixtus V reintroduced it into the Roman Calendar in 1585.[3] Pope Clement VIII made this feast a Greater Double in 1597.[4] The feast also continued as a memorial in the Roman Calendar of 1969.

Liturgical celebration

Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple (Russian icon, 16th century).

The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates it as one of its twelve Great Feasts on November 21 (for those churches which follow the Julian Calendar, November 21 falls on December 4 of the modern Gregorian Calendar). The first documented celebration of the feast in any calendar is the mention of the Εἴσοδος τῆς Παναγίας Θεοτόκου (Entry of the All-Holy Theotokos - i.e. into the Temple) in the 11th-century Menology of the Eastern Roman (also known as Byzantine) emperor Basil II. In the Orthodox Church the feast always falls during the Nativity Fast, and on the day of the feast the fasting rules are lessened somewhat so that fish, wine and oil may be eaten.

For the Roman Catholic Church, on the day of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, "we celebrate that dedication of herself which Mary made to God from her very childhood under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit who filled her with grace at her Immaculate Conception."[5]

November 21 is also a "Pro Orantibus" Day, a day of prayer for cloistered religious "totally dedicated to God in prayer, silence and concealment."[6]

The Presentation in art

Western depictions usually focused on the lone figure of the young Mary climbing the steep steps of the Temple, having left her parents at the bottom, and climbing towards the Chief Priest and other Temple figures at the top of the steps. The Presentation was one of the usual scenes in larger cycles of the Life of the Virgin, although it was not usually one of the scenes shown in a Book of hours.

Morpheus, sleepless, sleep-short

Morpheus (MOR-fee-uhs, -fyoos)
, noun
1. A son of Hypnos and the god of dreams.
2. In the arms of Morpheus: asleep.

Etymology
Middle English from Latin from Greek morphe + Latin -eus; coined by Ovid, with allusion to the forms seen in dreams.

Usage
"Let for the people be the first to admit a certain familiarity with sleepless nights and an envy of those who claim to fall into the arms of Morpheus the moment their head touches a pillow. Nguyen Thi Tu, an elderly Vietnamese lady who lives in the southern province of Ca Mau, claims that she hasn't slept a single wink since 1967." — Stephen Goode, A woman who never dreams or sleeps a wink, Insight on the News, Nov 22, 1999.

Ash Wednesday/Lent/carnival/Mardi Gras

Spotlight:

Mardi Gras
Mardi Gras
When is Carnival in Rio de Janeiro? It's seven weeks before Easter, with Lent approaching: Carnival time. In Rio de Janeiro, the festival begins tonight and ends on Shrove Tuesday. In Malta, it began yesterday. And in New Orleans, Mardi Gras is this coming Tuesday. The festivals are celebrated with parades, masked balls, dancing and feasting. In New Orleans, celebrants traditionally eat red beans and rice and king cakes. All the festivals end on Shrove Tuesday — the day before Ash Wednesday, when Lent begins, 40 weekdays before Easter. Let the good times roll.

Quote:

"You walk off the plane in Rio, and your blood temperature goes up. The feel of the wind on your face, the water on your skin, the taste of the food, the music, the sexuality." Amy Irving

Ash Wednesday:

base path, free agent outfielder, infectious personality, stays out of trouble

NPB/ BayStars to get speedy on basepaths

Four months ago, it was looking pretty grim for baseball fans in Yokohama. The BayStars' owners, Tokyo Broadcasting System, wanted to dump the cash-strapped, second-division team, and potential buyer, JS Group Corp., wanted to change the name of the team and move it to another city.
Neither side could agree. And after weeks of acrimonious negotiations, the deal fell apart in late October, and the BayStars will remain in Yokohama--for now.
Despite the dark cloud still hanging over the team, things are considerably cheerier this year at the BayStars spring training camp in Okinawa. thanks, in part, to flamboyant offseason acquisition Hichori Morimoto.
The 30-year-old free agent outfielder left the Nippon-Ham Fighters and brought his infectious personality to the BayStars.

Hours earlier, Judge Betty Williams of Brooklyn Criminal Court had settled a case against Mr. Kobayashi that included charges of trespassing and resisting arrest. Mr. Kobayashi, 32, had been taken into custody when he rushed onto the stage at last month’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island. He is a six-time winner, but he did not compete this year because he would not sign an exclusive contract with the organizers.
Judge Williams’ decision means he not only remains a free agent, he remains free. If he stays out of trouble for six months, his record will be cleared.
