Description and biology

Milkfish have a generally symmetrical and streamlined appearance, with a sizable forked caudal fin. They can grow to 1.70 m (5 ft 7 in) but are most often about 1 metre (39 in) in length. They have no teeth and generally feed on algae and invertebrates.
They occur in the Indian Ocean and across the Pacific Ocean, tending to school around coasts and islands with reefs. The young fry live at sea for two to three weeks and then migrate to mangrove swamps, estuaries, and sometimes lakes and return to sea to mature sexually and reproduce.

A capybara, the world’s largest rodent, is loose in California. If that’s not weird enough for you, there is this: wildlife officials say they have no plans to capture the R.O.U.S. anytime soon.
The rodent, which officials estimate weighs between 100 and 120 pounds, was photographed last month outside of a wastewater treatment plant in Paso Robles. The pictures quickly went viral on the Internet and wildlife officials confirmed Thursday that the mystery beast was indeed a capybara, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The semi-aquatic rodent is native to South America and normally isn’t found in the U.S. outside of a zoo. Capybaras can grow to the size of a large dog and typically prefer swampy habitats. Local officials say that someone probably had one as a pet before either losing it or letting it go.
The LAT notes that while this is the first confirmed capybara sighting in California, there have been several rumors in recent years about the possible presence of one in the area, beginning with a reported sighting three years ago in a pond at a local golf course.
Fish and Game spokesman Andrew Hughan told the paper that while the rodents are “weird-looking,” they normally aren’t dangerous. As a result, officials have no plans to set traps for the beast unless hunters or trappers go after it. "You can't hunt that thing," Hughan said. "If we see people out there with nets and traps trying to catch it, we may take a more aggressive stance for the protection of the animal."
