hanger-on, demonstrator, “cleared and restored”

The New York City police began clearing Zuccotti Park of the Occupy Wall Street protesters about 1 a.m. Tuesday, saying the camp would be “cleared and restored” before the morning and that any demonstrator who did not leave would be arrested.

Protest's Resilience Is Tested Even as the Occupy Wall Street protests have become a facet of Lower Manhattan, developments like the changing weather, the mayor's impatience and an influx of hangers-on raise questions about how long the movement will last, The New York Times writes. Some who spend the night in Zuccotti Park seem to be there only for the free food.

"We have a serious problem with hangers-on," Patrick Bruner, a protester and spokesman, told The Times. "We're trying to bring people into the fold instead of willfully excluding them."

Thomson was among a small handful of public figures whose names have resonated most strongly with me through nearly my entire life. I was fresh out of kindergarten when he hit the most famous home run in history — the “shot heard round the world” that deeply traumatized the Brooklyn Dodgers and their fans and propelled the New York Giants into the 1951 World Series against the Yankees. My dad, Chester Herbert (who was only in his 20s at the time), had an upholstery shop on Central Avenue in East Orange, N.J., and I was in the back of the shop with a cast of characters straight out of Damon Runyon. My mother’s name was Adelaide, and there were assorted craftsmen and hangers-on with names like Moe and Brownie and Earl Love and my beloved Uncle Breeze.
