‪#‎newonview‬: Gerrit Dou's "Sleeping Dog," 1650, on loan from the collection of Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo
Measuring 6 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches, this painting is truly a small wonder of the Dutch Golden Age. The sleeping dog is rendered in exquisitely fine and tender detail, a domestic vignette full of warmth and intimacy. This extraordinary painting commands a wall of its own in the European art galleries on the museum's second floor, so seek it out and take a closer look at the remarkable work of Dutch master Gerrit Dou. "Sleeping Dog" is part of a third rotation of loans from Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo's preeminent collection of Dutch and Flemish art of the Golden Age. We are immensely grateful for the van Otterloos' ongoing generosity in sharing their paintings with the Gallery and the 220,000+ visitors we welcome each year.

Why Doctors Need Stories

By PETER D. KRAMER

In an era of systematic clinical research, medicine still requires the vignette.

WE ARE entering what some in the technology industry refer to as a post-PC era. This does not mean that the personal computer is about to disappear. But according to estimates from Gartner, a research firm, combined shipments of web-connected smartphones and tablet computers are likely to exceed those of desktop and laptop computers for the first time this year, putting PCs in the shade. According to Morgan Stanley, an investment bank, there could be 10 billion mobile devices in circulation by 2020. Many of these will use bite-size chunks of software known as “apps”, some 18 billion of which are likely to be downloaded this year. As mobile, web-connected devices become ubiquitous, the volume of data they produce will soar. Cisco, a technology company, reckons that by 2015 some 6.3 exabytes of mobile data will be flowing each month, or the equivalent of 63 billion copies of The Economist. Much of that will be in the form of videos like the one below.

Ireland's new prime minister, Enda Kenny, couldn't resist teasing investors during a speech in London on Monday. Reminding his audience of the old saw that equity markets have predicted ten of the last five recessions, Kenny also cited IMF research that the bond markets have managed to predict 36 of the last seven defaults.

The exabyte (derived from the SI prefix exa-) is a unit of information or computer storage equal to one quintillion bytes (short scale). The unit symbol for the exabyte is EB. The unit prefix exa indicates the sixth power of 1000:
  • 1 EB = 1000000000000000000B = 1018 bytes = 1 billion gigabytes = 1 million terabytes
The exbibyte, using a binary prefix, is the analogous power of 1024 bytes.
In principle, the 64-bit microprocessors found in many computers can address 16 exbibytes, or just over 18 exabytes, of memory.[1]

La Sombrita, which means little shadow in Spanish, was designed in partnership between the Los Angeles Department of Transportation and Kounkuey Design Initiative, a development and design nonprofit that works in under-resourced communities. The plan was to address what the city said are among the top-cited problems that residents have with city bus stops: Many don’t have adequate shade or are too dark at night and feel unsafe.

A rectangular, perforated piece of metal is attached to a pole at a bus stop on a sidewalk. The top of the piece of metal is curved, almost at a right angle to the rest of the piece.
Critics have mocked the design of La Sombrita, one of four new installations at bus stops in Los Angeles that are designed to provide shade during the day and light at night.Credit...LADOT, via Twitter

After calling at one or two flat places, with low dams stretching out into the lake, whereon were stumpy lighthouses, like windmills without sails, the whole looking like a Dutch vignette, we came at midnight to Cleveland, where we lay all night, and until nine o'clock next morning.
