peristyle, manifesto, afterthought

WITH its grand marble staircase, inner and outer peristyles and Roman gardens, the Getty Villa in Los Angeles seems a fitting backdrop for a small army of Greek gods, Roman warriors and Etruscan vases. But in two weeks visitors to the villa, which houses the antiquities collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum, will encounter a sculpture from a very different time and place.

“I’m actually really proud that I turned this tiny little afterthought of a space into a fully functioning office,” Ms. Gouldner said. “That the space is limited doesn’t limit me.” It serves all her needs, she noted, and is tall enough to stand up in. “I’m 5-foot-8, and it’s probably 5-foot-10.”

Never Mind What’s in Them, Bags Are the Fashion
By MICHAEL BARBARO
Once a flimsy afterthought in American retailing, the lowly, free store bag is undergoing a luxurious makeover.
The day I arrived at this 120-year-old restored plantation, the porticos and rooms were teeming with mountain bikers. In the kitchen, I found two young foreigners, David Botzer, 29, an Israeli computer programmer, and Peter Meek, 24, a mechanical engineer from New Zealand. Colombia had been an afterthought for them, mysterious and risky. But both said they found the spectacularly rugged coffee country to be safe and the people courteous.
